Title: Magical Lies Make Our Perceived Existence Possible
Abstract:
Our experience of existence is built upon a foundation of illusions—magical lies that shape our perception of reality. These lies are not deceptions in the malicious sense but are intrinsic to the way we, as conscious beings, interpret the world. Every perception we have is a magical lie because it conceals the deeper truths of existence, allowing us to function and survive within a limited framework of understanding.
For instance, when we stand on the earth, we do not perceive it as the spherical planet it truly is. Instead, it feels flat and stationary beneath our feet, even though it is spinning at dizzying speeds and hurtling through space at an incredible velocity. Similarly, objects around us appear solid and tangible, yet at the atomic level, they are mostly empty space—proportionately as void as the vast stretches between galaxies. These perceptions are not false in a practical sense but are simplified interpretations that mask the underlying complexity of reality.
Furthermore, our perceptions are species-specific, shaped by the evolutionary needs of our bodies and minds. We access only a narrow bandwidth of possible experiences—light within certain wavelengths, sounds within certain frequencies—while an infinite spectrum of reality remains beyond our grasp. This selective filtering ensures survival but also limits our understanding of the true nature of existence.
Even our bodies are part of this magical lie. They appear as solid entities navigating a tangible world, yet they too are composed of atoms bound by forces that operate invisibly. The interaction between these illusions—our bodies and the environment—creates the seamless experience we call life. In this sense, illusion interacts with illusion to sustain existence.
Magical lies are therefore not merely distortions; they are the very fabric of experience itself. Every moment we perceive exists as a superposition of magical lies—a layered interplay of interpretations masking deeper truths. To move beyond these illusions and grasp fundamental reality requires a transcendence of all systems of thought and perception. It demands that we step outside the frameworks that define our existence and approach reality without the filters imposed by mind and body.
In essence, magical lies do not detract from existence; they make it possible. They create a coherent narrative out of chaos, enabling us to navigate a universe that is far more complex than we can comprehend. Yet, to truly know what lies beyond these illusions, we must be willing to let go of them entirely—a task that calls for profound transformation and insight beyond ordinary perception.
Scientific inquiry, often regarded as the pursuit of objective truth, paradoxically extends the web of magical lies that shape our perception of reality. These "magical lies" are not deceptions but the constructive illusions that allow us to navigate and comprehend an otherwise incomprehensible universe. Science, by refining and expanding our understanding, deepens these illusions rather than dispelling them.
Perception itself is a process of constructing reality. For example, visual illusions like the "Scintillating Starburst" demonstrate how the brain "connects the dots" to create subjective experiences that do not correspond to physical reality1. Similarly, illusions studied in neuroscience reveal that what we perceive is not an accurate depiction of the external world but a filtered and processed interpretation designed for survival37. Science, by analyzing these processes, uncovers how our perceptions are inherently limited and shaped by cognitive biases.
While science seeks to uncover fundamental truths, it operates within the constraints of human cognition and perception. For instance:
These scientific insights replace one set of magical lies with another—more refined but still incomplete interpretations.
Even scientific observation is subject to cognitive biases and perceptual gaps. For example:
Thus, scientific inquiry does not eliminate magical lies but amplifies them by creating more sophisticated frameworks for interpreting reality.
As science progresses, it broadens the scope of magical lies:
These advancements deepen our understanding while simultaneously distancing us from unmediated reality.
Scientific inquiry does not dispel magical lies; it refines and extends them. By revealing the mechanisms behind perception and expanding our interpretive frameworks, science enhances our ability to navigate the world while reinforcing the constructed nature of our experience. To transcend these illusions entirely and access fundamental reality would require moving beyond all systems of thought—including those provided by science—into a realm where perception itself dissolves. Until then, science remains an essential tool for exploring and embracing the magical lies that make existence possible.
