Yoga is a multifaceted practice originally meant for spiritual evolution of an individual. However, in the present times, it is frequently explored as a secular practice to boost health in a holistic way. Health is a byproduct of Yoga practice. Nevertheless, it is important to understand Yoga from therapeutic aspect too. Indeed, the therapeutic or the positive mental health effects of Yoga reinforces the practitioners to make it as a lifestyle in the long run, if not at the beginning.
Despite Yoga being practiced globally for various reasons, understanding Yoga from a spiritual and therapeutic perspective in a scientific way is in its infancy. For example, years of practice is very commonly considered as a proxy for Yoga/meditation proficiency. Can this be really true? Or do we need a holistic assessment from both philosophical and scientific perspective? Similarly, other questions like, can Yoga be packaged for different disorders as it is practiced in a disease specific manner in modern medicine, do persist. But against all the odds, stories of transformations from the practitioners, both in healthy and diseased population has always been encouraging to explore the science behind Yoga.
This special session on Yoga will focus on some of the challenges related to yoga/meditation proficiency; effects of Yoga/meditation on stress, burnout, depression, & cancer. Sessions will also throw light on brain mechanisms underlying Yoga practices including meditation.
